The Historic Sunset Highway
in Washington

Davenport to Spokane

Description of the Route

This segment of the Sunset Highway is probably the best place to view the original roadbed as the concrete pavement has not been resurfaced. It is almost as it was 100 years ago. I would recommend to any person interested in the history of this road to travel along this segment.

Mondovi

The first post office in Lincoln County was in Old Mondovi. The original town of Mondovi was on the old wagon road to Fort Colville between Reardan and Davenport. Mondovi was a stopping place for travelers on the road. This is also where the trail forked. If you are traveling north, the left fork would take you to Fort Colville and the right fork would take you to Spokane.

Between Davenport and Reardan

Traveling eastbound from Davenport the old 1908 state road and the 1915 Sunset Highway both continued to follow the section line at Schumer Road to Riffe Rd N. then veers to the right to enter town. In 1918, the highway was improved and follows the railroad tracks. The new highway built in the 1930's bypassed this area. Much of the old highway in this area still retains it's original concrete pavement.

Reardan

Reardan is the first town reached after Deep Creek. Before Reardan was established, the first post office in the area was located on the Fort Colville Road. This was at J. S. Capps place and his ranch was about a mile north of the present town. On September 23, 1882, William F. Hooker and John W. Still platted a town and called it Fairweather. The little town had a store, hotel and blacksmith shop.

Original 1919 Concrete Highway

East of Reardan the old highway veered to the right just past S. Green St. onto what is now Brommer Road. The highway then followed Brommer Road and then merged with what is now Alexander Road. Just before Highway 2, the old highway curved to the right onto what in now called S. Carstens Road. Following the section line the highway curved to the left and follows the section line all the way to Spokane.

Deep Creek

Deep Creek began in the late 1870's when a few settlers made homes there. The first store in Deep Creek opened in 1880 by John Nicholls and Colonel Peyton. The first post office was also established. In 1883 William Herman established a shop. The town was situated along the route of the first wagon road across Lincoln County. When silver was discovered in the Okanogan, every prospector from Spokane eastward had to come through Deep Creek. The town served as a resting place for the miners and aldo travelers taking the stages to Waterville.
