Moses Coulee
At the top of the west side of the Moses Coulee, the 1922 Sunset Highway spilt from the 1885 wagon road and 1908 State Road No. 7 and a new highway was built down the hill ans across the Moses Coulee bottom. You can drive to the top of the west side but there is now a gate so you are not able to drive down the old 1922 road. There are some great views of Moses Coulee from this spot.
At the bottom of the Moses Coulee is the ghost town of Spencer. Spencer was a small wayside town. Not much if anything is written about this place. The Waterville - Coulee City wagon road and the 1902 telephone line both passed through this town. The hotel served the stagecoach and early automobile traffic on the Sunset Highway who were traveling across the coulee between Spokane and Waterville.
On the east side of the Moses Coulee, you are able to explore more of the old highway and wagon road as it climbs the hill from the bottom. You can still see many of the old 1902 telephone poles that follow the old road to Coulee City. The abandoned 1922 road crosses over the older roads as it climbs the hill. At the top of the east side, the 1913 Sunset Highway, split off from the wagon road and follows Highway 2 to Heritage Road and then reconnects to the old wagon road.
