The 1926 Sunset Highway - West side of Snoqualmie Pass
In 1926, the Sunset Highway underwent major improvements. The curves were smoothed and the steep grades were lessened. The switchbacks were bypassed by a newly constructed highway on the western side of the Snoqualmie River. This new road ran up the hill just under the old Milwaukee Hi-line. The road meets the railroad grade at the top of the hill. The Hi-line was abandoned in 1916 when the new tunnel was completed.
At Exit 47, FS 9034 runs on the 1926 road. The bridge over the Snoqualmie River was built in 1926 and the road continues in a curve to merge with the westbound lanes of Interstate 90.
