A party made up of Matt Hickey, commissioner for district No. 2, E. M. Gillette and F. A. Warren, county engineer, drove to Ellensburg last Saturday by way of the Colockum road, which crosses the mountains a few miles below Wenatchee.
The object of the trip was to inspect the road over the mountain and to confer with the commissioners of Kittitas county to see if the two counties could not unite and put the highway into better condition. The Kittitas commissioner will make a trip over the road in the near future and it is believed that they will favor the proposition of improving the road. There are many long and steep hills on the Colockum road and it will necessitate the expenditure of thousands of dollars before it will be in good shape for travel.
There should be a road across the mountains to connect with Ellensburg and Cle Elum and that road should be via the Blewett Pass, The writer traveled over both roads last year and found the Blewett road to be a much better and shorter route. It is possible at the present time for an automobile to make the trip to Ellensburg and Cle Elum by way of Blewett, but it is estimated that it would take from $3000 to $5000 to put the road into first class condition.
With this amount of money spent on the highway all of the bad grades could be eliminated and it would not take more than five or six hours to make the trip from this city. It is not more than six miles from the summit until one strikes the good roads for which Kittitas county is noted and after that it is clear sailing all over the county. If any money is to be spent on a highway into Kittitas county it should be on the one via Blewett, as it is the most feasible and shortest route to the south side.
